Becoming an Internet millionaire

By Jakob Jelling

It is no secret that people have, and still are, making fortunes on the Internet. The question is can you become an Internet millionaire too?

While it is possible to make money online the key to doing so is to research and learning as much as you can before trying. Working online is very similar to opening a storefront business. You need to know what your business will be doing, how to get the products that you wish to sell and how to promote your business. Of course a storefront business will not be successful with out a lot of hard work and dedication, and neither will your online business if you do not invest lots of sweat equity.

The first step to doing anything is to gain as much information about it as possible. While operating a business online is a lot like operating a storefront business, many of the skills required are very different. For example, you advertise your business by submitting your URL to search engines instead of mailing out flyers and the number of people who see your site is dependant upon how well you optimize your site for search engines.

One of the first things that you should learn a little about is HTML. HTML is a simple language often used to create web pages. While you may hire a programmer to create your web site you will save money by being able to make small changes to your site yourself and this knowledge will make understanding how the Internet works much easier. You can learn the basics of HTML by borrowing a book from the library or searching for HTML tutorials online. While searching for HTML tutorials you will also want to search for free HTML editors. There are many good free HTML editors available and having one will allow you to experiment with HTML as well as changing or producing your first site.

Now that you know a little bit about HTML and how to produce a web page you can begin to learn how the Internet works. Currently search engines govern the Internet, as people will not be able to find your site if it is not listed on a search engine. There are other ways for people find your site without using a search engine, such as having a link on a related site, but a search engine is the most common way for people t find things online. To get listed on a search engine you simply have to submit your URL to the search engine and they will eventually look at your site and may add it to the results displayed when searching a related topic.

One thing that may surprise you when searching the phrase "submit URL", is the number of search engines out there and the number of companies who want your money to submit your URL. Some search engine submission companies do offer a valuable service and they may save you a lot of time and effort, but they are not doing anything that you can not do yourself. You should take the time to submit your URL yourself to a few search engines before opting to pay for submissions so that you understand the process involved.

A search engine displays web site results based upon how relevant it thinks the site is to the topic being searched. In order to make sure your site is one of the first sites displayed you need to optimize it for the topic it is about. The art of optimizing your site is known as SEO, or search engine optimizing. The art of SEO may take a lifetime to fully understand but it is valuable to research. There are many simple things that you will want to keep in mind when producing your web site such as using suitable key words in the text on your site.

Making money online is not hard to do but it does require some effort and research. If you are inclined to experiment and like to learn new things then working online may be an excellent choice for you. If you already have an existing business and simply wish to expand then the Internet is still for you but you will want to use the services of a professional. Do not miss the opportunity to expand your business or find new ways to make money but be careful to avoid the get rich quick programs and those who only wish to make money off of your inexperience. Knowledge is the key to everything that you do and increases your chances of being in the right place at the right time with the right thing and thus making a small fortune on the Internet.
