Setting up a home office

By Jakob Jelling

Setting up a home office will help you work from home effectively.

If you're going to be working at home, you'll probably find that the hardest part about it is dealing with the distractions of being in your home. After all, if you go to the office, then you'll be surrounded by other people working - and you probably aren't all that tempted by things around you in the workplace to avoid working. At home, however, you're surrounded by everything in your home.

Setting up a home office is probably the best thing you can do in order to make sure that you'll get enough work done when you need to. This is because a home office will allow you to feel like you're actually at work, which will keep you on task. Not only that, but if you've ever tried to do something at home, you know that a short trip to look for something you need can easily turn into a huge detour. Setting up a home office will help you make sure that you have everything you need within reach.

The first thing that you should do when you're setting up a home office, is to pick the room. You should decide which room is best based on where it is in your home, and what other things you're going to need to do. If you have older children, or no children at all, then you might be better off picking a room in the basement, or on one of the ends of the house, away from the rest of the household. If you have small children or a baby, however, you will probably want to make sure that your office is somewhere where you can hear what is going on in the other room, just in case you are needed. Also, make sure that there will be enough power outlets or phone lines in your chosen room.

Next, you should pick furniture for your home office. Make sure that you buy the most comfortable chair available. If you don't, then you might find that you get tired easily, or that you start to feel sore after working for a little bit. Also, you should make sure that your desk is the right size for everything you'll need on it - whether that's a phone, a fax machine, or a computer.

Finally, when you are setting up a home office, you should try to keep as many distractions out of the room as possible, and always keep it clean. That way, you won't feel distracted from work while you're trying to get things done.
